1930 World Cup: Uruguay – Argentina 4-2

This was the very first World Cup final in history, played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Despite goals from Carlos Peucelle and Guillermo Stábile, La Albiceleste bowed to the might of La Celeste and fell 2-4.

1978 World Cup: Argentina – Netherlands 3-1 (AET)

Argentina captured its first ever world title after an extra-time victory over the Netherlands in the final (3-1) on June 25, 1978, at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

1986 World Cup: Argentina – Germany 3-2

A suspense-filled clash at Mexico’s Estadio Azteca. Jorge Burruchaga netted the winner six minutes from time, latching onto a sublime pass from Diego Armando Maradona. La Albiceleste lifted the trophy for the second time!

1990 World Cup: Germany – Argentina 1-0

This final took place on July 8, 1990, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. West Germany clinched the win thanks to an Andreas Brehme penalty in the 85th minute. It was the first final to see red cards: Argentina finished with nine men after Pedro Monzón and Gustavo Dezotti were sent off.

2014 World Cup: Germany – Argentina 1-0 (AET)

Mario Götze was the hero of the night, scoring the only goal after a fine assist from André Schürrle in extra time. It was heartbreak for Lionel Messi and his teammates at the Maracanã in Rio.

2022 World Cup: France – Argentina (3-3, 2–4 pens)

This was one of the most spectacular finals in World Cup history. At Lusail Stadium, the showdown between Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé ultimately went Argentina’s way, despite a sensational hat-trick from the Frenchman. A victory snatched from the jaws of defeat, deep into the night!
