AS Roma - Real Madrid: Madrid squad with four absentees
José Mourinho has named 23 players to face AS Roma, with several key players included despite four significant absences from his squad.
Real Madrid have announced their squad for the trip to face AS Roma this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., on the second matchday of the Champions League. After their 2-1 victory over Inter Milan on the opening matchday, the Madrid club will look to claim a second consecutive European win.
However, José Mourinho will have to manage without Rodrygo, Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio, all of whom are absent and still recovering. These absences primarily limit the Portuguese coach’s options in defence ahead of what is always a challenging trip to Rome’s Olympic Stadium.
Real Madrid’s 23-man squad
Goalkeepers: Courtois - Lunin - Sergio Mestre.
Defenders: Huijsen - Trent - Konaté - Cucurella - Álvaro Carreras - Rüdiger - Dumfries.
Midfielders: Bellingham - Camavinga - Valverde - Tchouaméni - Arda Güler - Bernardo Silva - Thiago.
Forwards: Vinícius Jr. - Endrick - Mbappé - C. Espí - Brahim - Yan Diomande.
Despite the four absences, Mourinho will therefore be able to rely on most of his key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Thibaut Courtois.
The last competitive meeting took place in 2018
Real Madrid and AS Roma have not faced each other in an official competition since the 2018-2019 Champions League group stage. In the first leg, on September 19, 2018 at the Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid won 3-0.
In the return leg, on November 27, 2018 at the Stadio Olimpico, Real once again came out on top with a 2-0 victory. The Spanish club therefore won both matches in that campaign, scoring five goals and conceding none against the Romans.
Eight years later, the two clubs meet again with the ambition of taking an important step forward in this new league phase.
