Lamine Yamal makes no secret of his desire to face Real Madrid in the Champions League, a fixture he now dreams of experiencing.

Lamine Yamal now dreams of a European Clásico. Asked about the rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, the Spanish winger admitted that he would like to see the two giants meet in the Champions League.

The 19-year-old was very clear about his wish:

“We have never faced Real Madrid in the Champions League. I would like to face them in the Champions League.”

A fixture that would give a new dimension to a rivalry he has known since his formative years at La Masia.

Yamal wants to experience a European Clásico

The young Spain international also stressed the particular intensity of these matches:

“When you come from La Masia, from the first Clásico you play, you already know what it is about and you know that this match is a war.”

Yamal notably cited the example of Marcus Rashford, who, in his view, discovered this tension during a 2-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu before approaching the return match differently. Barça and Real have not faced each other in the Champions League since the 2011 semi-final, won by the Catalans.

Barça knocked out in the quarter-finals last season

In the 2025-2026 edition, Barcelona were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Atlético de Madrid, losing 3-2 on aggregate. The Blaugrana lost the first leg 2-0 before winning the return match 2-1, without managing to overturn the tie.

This season, the Catalan club made a strong start to its European campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord on the opening matchday. Lamine Yamal had also scored and provided two assists.

Yamal among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or

His performances have also earned him a place among the 30 players nominated for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The trophy will be awarded on 26 October in London. After winning the World Cup with Spain and enjoying a top-level season with Barça, Yamal is among the most prominent players in this edition.

A potential European Clásico would therefore offer the young Blaugrana another major stage, despite his age, having already become accustomed to the biggest occasions.
