Emerse Faé breaks his silence: “Let the coaches work”
Quiet since the end of his time with the Ivorian national team, Emerse Faé took advantage of the CAF strategic conference in Sal, Cape Verde, to speak to Brut Afrique. In a candid interview, he defended the work of the continent’s coaches.
A call for patience and resources
The coach denounced the conditions in which African coaches work, facing constant pressure to deliver results. In his view, federations must rethink their approach if they want to see African football reach the next level.
African leaders must give coaching staffs time to work. They have ideas, but in football, everything does not happen in a day. It takes work, it takes time. So, let these coaches work.
The 42-year-old coach, who won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, also denounced the gap between the ambitions and the resources deployed by African nations.
(...) and also give them the conditions to work properly. You have high ambitions. The conditions made available to the staff must match those ambitions
Leaving through the back door despite the achievement
This message takes on particular significance given his recent history. Not retained as head of the Elephants at the end of his contract, Faé can point to a major achievement: taking Côte d’Ivoire beyond the group stage of the World Cup, a first in the country’s history. Despite this, the FIF chose to move on and handed the team to Hervé Renard. At 42, the former Ivorian international is currently without a club.
