The World Cup 2026 has radically reshaped the digital landscape of football, with Erling Haaland and Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha emerging as the biggest winners in terms of Instagram follower growth following the tournament.

While neither FIFA nor Meta has released an official list of follower growth during the 2026 World Cup, data aggregated by tracking platforms such as Sportico highlight massive surges in online popularity.

Haaland exited the World Cup as the absolute leader in raw follower growth. The striker added over 32 million followers. This surge was driven by his spectacular on pitch performances, scoring 7 goals and leading Norway to the quarter finals securing their first ever World Cup knockout victory.

Furthermore, Haaland’s popularity exploded in the United States due to his engaging personality, amplified by a viral photograph of him posing with a stuffed raccoon upon his return to Norway.

However, the most extraordinary commercial story belongs to Vozinha. The Cape Verde goalkeeper began the tournament with approximately 30,000 followers and finished with nearly 29.5 million representing a staggering growth rate of nearly 97,900%.

The catalyst for this explosion was his heroic performance against eventual champions Spain. Vozinha made seven crucial saves, earned the Man of the Match award and secured a historic 0-0 draw.

He gained 14 million followers in the four days following that specific match alone, briefly making him the most followed goalkeeper on the platform ahead of historical icons.

The next generation & established icons

The data also highlights the rise of football's next generation. Jude Bellingham added approximately 12 million followers after scoring seven goals and guiding England to the semi finals.

Similarly, Lamine Yamal gained up to 11 million new followers following Spain's ultimate triumph in the final.

Even younger prospects benefited immensely. Mexico's 17 year old talent Gilberto Mora jumped from 1.1 million to 7.7 million followers proving that simply being a breakout prospect on the world stage is enough to trigger massive digital expansion.

Meanwhile, established veterans maintained their steady digital dominance. Despite already possessing the largest accounts in the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo added nearly 12 million followers while Lionel Messi & Neymar added approximately 7.8 million and 8.1 million respectively.
