FC Barcelona forward Hamza Abdelkarim is preparing for an emotional and decisive test on Wednesday evening when the Catalan giants host his former club Al Ahly in the annual Joan Gamper Trophy according to Spanish daily Sport.

Pre-Season top scorer seizes his moment

The teenage Egyptian forward has emerged as one of Barcelona's standout performers during their pre season preparations under manager Hansi Flick.

Abdelkarim currently leads the team’s pre-season scoring charts with three goals in four appearances, making the most of every opportunity granted by the German coach.

His latest goal arrived on Sunday against Swiss outfit FC Basel, where he needed just four minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute to clinically finish a left-footed strike from a Karim Adeyemi delivery.

Sport highlighted the forward's predatory box movement, noting:

"Hamza Abdelkarim does not need continuous minutes to leave his mark on the match. He can play just a few minutes and whenever he finds space, he is in the exact right place for a striker"

Emotional reunion amid striker shortage

Wednesday's Joan Gamper clash carries deep personal significance for Abdelkarim, as he faces the Egyptian and African champions for the first time since departing their youth ranks to join Barcelona earlier this year.

The friendly also serves as a crucial audition for the young attacker. With Barcelona actively seeking a recognized centre forward following the departures of Robert Lewandowski & Ferran Torres and with negotiations for Julian Alvarez facing ongoing complications, Abdelkarim is determined to convince Flick and the sporting directorate to hand him a permanent first-team spot.

The meeting with Al Ahly represents Barcelona's final dress rehearsal before opening their La Liga campaign against Elche CF.

"It will be a special match for Hamza, despite being a friendly and it will be his final opportunity before the serious business begins.. When Barcelona face Elche, the decisive moment will arrive to determine the actual role he will play in Hansi Flick's plans. Until then, he continues to perform his duties to the highest level" Sport reported.
