An experienced South American crew

The FIFA Referees Committee has officially entrusted Sampaio with the immense responsibility of blowing the first whistle of this historic 48 team tournament.

Taking charge of the crucial Group A clash, the Brazilian official will be heavily supported by his compatriots. Bruno Pires & Bruno Boschilia are set to run the touchlines as his primary assistants.

Meanwhile Uruguayan official Juan Gabriel Benitez steps in as the fourth official, with Eduardo Cardozo serving as the reserve assistant to complete the on field team.

A global video officiating setup

To ensure maximum accuracy during this high stakes fixture, the global governing body has assembled a diverse tactical team inside the video operation room.

Colombian referee Nicolas Gallo will lead the VAR duties. He will be directly assisted by Chile's Juan Lara while French official Jerome Brisard provides additional technical support. This comprehensive setup reflects the critical importance of avoiding controversial decisions right as the highly anticipated North American tournament begins.

Sampaio's elite track record

Selecting Sampaio is a testament to his vast experience on the global stage. According to international sports records, the veteran referee famously took charge of the intense 2022 quarter final between England & France in Qatar.

Although he faced heavy media scrutiny over his foul tolerance during that dramatic clash, FIFA clearly values his strong disciplinary approach and ability to handle immense stadium pressure.

Sampaio has been a FIFA-listed official since 2013, steadily climbing the international ranks to secure this prestigious assignment.

The prestige of the first whistle

Earning the opening match assignment places Sampaio in an exclusive footballing fraternity.

Historically the referee chosen for the first game sets the disciplinary tone for the entire month. A prime example occurred during the 2006 tournament in Germany.

Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo was selected to officiate the opening fixture between the hosts and Costa Rica. His flawless performance in that high scoring opener deeply impressed the FIFA committee, ultimately earning him the assignment for the legendary final between Italy and France where he famously sent off Zinedine Zidane.

Sampaio will undoubtedly hope this June assignment serves as a similar stepping stone toward the ultimate finale.
