Ghana: Otto Addo takes federation to FIFA

Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reportedly lodged a complaint with FIFA to obtain payment of several outstanding salaries, bonuses and other contractual benefits following his dismissal in March 2026. The amount claimed is said to exceed $750,000.

The dispute between Otto Addo and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is taking a legal turn. According to information reported by Joy Sports journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, the former Ghana head coach has reportedly taken his financial dispute to FIFA in order to obtain payment of sums he believes are still owed to him.

At the heart of the proceedings are reportedly around 15 months of unpaid salaries, along with performance bonuses and other benefits provided for in his contract. Otto Addo received a monthly salary of $50,000. The outstanding wages alone would therefore amount to around $750,000, excluding the other compensation being claimed.

Dismissal after two defeats in friendlies

The dispute stems from the premature departure of the 50-year-old coach on 31 March 2026. The GFA had decided to end his tenure after a series of disappointing results during the March international window.

The Black Stars had notably suffered a heavy defeat against Austria (5-1) in Vienna before losing to Germany (2-1) in Stuttgart. Those two defeats brought the Ghanaian national team's losing streak to four matches.

The separation came just over two months before the 2026 World Cup, a competition in which Ghana was due to face England, Croatia and Panama in Group L.

A second spell in charge of the Black Stars

Otto Addo returned to the Black Stars bench in March 2024, following a first spell between 2022 and 2023. His return was intended to put the Ghanaian national team back on track after Chris Hughton's departure.

The former Ghana international, who had also worked as an assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund, has therefore not left his position without a financial dispute remaining unresolved.

For now, the Ghana Football Association has not officially reacted to reports of the complaint filed with FIFA. The world governing body could be called upon to examine the contractual obligations of both parties if the proceedings are confirmed.

The case therefore remains pending an official position from the GFA.
