Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened his Premier League account for the season during Coventry City's 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday. An important goal for the former Nottingham Forest player, who finished last season with four goals in the English top flight.

Taiwo Awoniyi is back among the goals. The Nigeria international scored his first Premier League goal of the season when Sunderland visited Coventry City on matchday nine. His goal contributed to Coventry City's 3-1 victory in front of their home fans.

The Super Eagles striker stood out by doubling his team's lead. After winning the ball back, he calmly finished the move with a well-controlled shot, giving the opposing goalkeeper little chance. An efficient finish that allowed the Sky Blues to take a two-goal lead over the Black Cats.

Beyond its importance in the flow of the match, the goal also marked the start of Awoniyi's season from a statistical perspective. The Nigerian has finally opened his league account and is back among Coventry City's goalscorers.

A notable celebration after his goal

After finding the net, Taiwo Awoniyi also attracted attention with his celebration. The striker took out his shin guard, which features a cross, and held it up in front of the cameras. The religious gesture did not go unnoticed.

The goal came after a previous season in which the Nigerian scored four Premier League goals. He therefore begins a new campaign with the aim of becoming more effective in front of goal.

Coventry City breathe easier in the standings

The victory over Sunderland also gives Coventry City a significant boost in the standings. With their third win of the season, the club moves two points clear of the relegation zone and gains some breathing room in the battle to avoid relegation. The Nigerian striker has now opened his account and hopes to continue scoring to contribute to his team's objectives.
