Premier League: Chelsea pile more misery on Manchester United and return to the top four!
Chelsea beat Manchester United thanks to Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, deepening the Red Devils’ crisis after they were reduced to 10 men following the break.
The respite was short-lived for Michael Carrick. Despite mending his relationship with Bruno Fernandes, his team lost at Chelsea (2-0) on Saturday, October 31. The Blues won this opening fixture of matchday 9 in the Premier League by making the difference in the second half.
Rogers unlocks the game with a solo run
The first half had nevertheless failed to separate the two sides. A disallowed offside goal for each team kept the score at 0-0 at half-time, even though the Mancunians had created several chances.
After the break, Morgan Rogers changed the course of the match. Following a misplaced pass by Bryan Mbeumo and a recovery by Roméo Lavia, the Englishman set off from deep, ran through the Manchester United defence and beat Senne Lammens with a delicate chip (50th minute).
Martínez sent off, Palmer converts the penalty
The match then definitively swung in Chelsea’s favour. On a ball into the box, Lisandro Martínez caught Wesley Fofana in the face with his elbow. The Argentine received a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal, while a penalty was awarded to the London side.
Cole Palmer converted it in the 64th minute. Chelsea then controlled proceedings, while Estêvão saw another goal ruled out for offside. In stoppage time, Penders tipped a Mbeumo effort onto the crossbar.
Chelsea fourth, Manchester United still 16th
With 16 points, Chelsea move provisionally into fourth place. Manchester United remain 16th with seven points and suffer their fourth defeat in nine league matches.
In all competitions, the Red Devils have now suffered a third consecutive defeat, following losses to Como and Bournemouth. Their winless run has now reached nine matches, piling further pressure on Carrick.
