Ivory Coast: Jean-Michaël Seri announces international retirement

Just two weeks after Ivory Coast's elimination in the World Cup Round of 16, Jean-Michaël Seri announced the end of his international career on July 16. The Ivorian Maribor midfielder revealed his decision in a message posted on social media.

"After 11 years with the national team, 5 Africa Cup of Nations appearances including one championship, and a World Cup appearance, today I announce the end of my international career. Representing Ivory Coast has been an honor and a responsibility that I have always carried with pride."

Jean-Michaël Seri began his international journey in 2014, when he was first called up for a friendly against Belgium that ended in a 2-2 draw. He then made his official debut in September 2015 against Sierra Leone, where the team claimed a 2-1 victory in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Across 64 international caps, the defensive midfielder scored 4 goals and provided 4 assists. Yet he will be especially remembered for lifting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations trophy on home soil.

At 34 years old, Jean-Michaël Seri draws the curtain on his journey with the Ivory Coast Elephants. However, he hasn't hung up his boots just yet, as he continues his club career with Slovenian side Maribor, hoping to inspire the next generation with his experience.
