Lionel Messi Reaches Agreement to Buy Eldense

Lionel Messi is set to take another major step in his relationship with Spanish football. The Argentine has reached an agreement in principle to acquire 100% of the shares in CD Eldense, a second-division club, potentially putting him in sole control of another professional team.

After making history in Spanish football on the pitch with FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi is now preparing to return to the Spanish football scene… but in an entirely different role. According to several Spanish sources, including the EFE news agency, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has reached an agreement in principle with Eldense’s owners to acquire the club’s entire share capital.

The operation would not involve other former players or an investment group. Messi is expected to act alone and become the owner of the club based in Elda, in the province of Alicante. The move reflects the former Barcelona star’s growing desire to become increasingly involved in football management and ownership beyond his career as a player.

Messi Moves to the Next Level

The potential acquisition would represent a significant step up in scale. In April 2026, Messi had already taken control of UE Cornellà, a club competing in Catalonia’s regional divisions. With Eldense, he is now set to move to a higher level by taking charge of a club competing in Spain’s second division.

The Elda-based club, which recently returned to the second tier, is nevertheless going through a difficult period on the sporting front. After four matchdays, the team has collected just two points and has recently parted ways with manager Claudio Barragán. The arrival of a high-profile owner such as Messi could therefore quickly bring new sporting ambitions to the club.

A Deal Still to Be Finalized

Despite the agreement in principle, Messi is not yet officially the owner of Eldense. The transaction still has to go through several legal and contractual procedures, including a due diligence process, before receiving approval from Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD).

If these final formalities are completed, Messi will become one of the new figures in Spanish club ownership. After conquering Spain as a player, the Argentine genius now appears determined to write a new chapter there — this time from the executive offices.
