Lyon: Ernest Nuamah scores his first brace in Ligue 1

Ernest Nuamah scored twice in the first half against Rennes on Saturday, during the fifth matchday of Ligue 1. Scoring in the 7th and 30th minutes, the Ghanaian forward played a major role in Lyon’s 4-0 victory at Groupama Stadium.

Nuamah found the back of the net for the second time this season in Ligue 1. After scoring against Auxerre on September 4, on the third matchday, he struck twice against Rennes this time to take his league tally to three goals. He had also provided an assist for Felix Bacher in Lyon’s 3-1 win over Auxerre.

This was Nuamah’s first brace in Ligue 1. With Lyon, however, it was his second. The previous one came on March 13, 2025, against FCSB in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16. Nuamah scored Lyon’s second and fourth goals in the 37th and 88th minutes, respectively, as they won 4-0.

Against Rennes, the Ghanaian helped Lyon take control quickly. Nuamah’s two goals put Lyon on the right track before Zachary Athekame extended the lead in the 48th minute, shortly after half-time. Corentin Tolisso then scored the fourth goal in the 76th minute to seal Lyon’s victory.

Across his career, the Ghanaian has now recorded four braces. Before joining Lyon, he had scored two with FC Nordsjælland. The first came on February 28, 2023, against Aarhus Fremad in the Danish Cup, with goals in the 17th and 34th minutes.

The second followed a few weeks later, on March 19, 2023, in the Danish league against Brøndby. Nuamah scored both of Nordsjælland’s goals, in the 52nd and 90th minutes, for a 2-1 victory.

With this brace, Nuamah has therefore taken his Ligue 1 tally to three goals this season and recorded his first two-goal performance in the French league. Lyon, meanwhile, ultimately won 4-0 and continued their scoring run after a first half they had already largely dominated.
