Nasser Al-Khelaïfi rules out any bid for FIFA presidency

Tipped as a possible successor to Gianni Infantino, the PSG and European Club Association president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has categorically denied any ambition for the top job at world football’s governing body.

As FIFA’s leadership weathers a stormy period around the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi’s name had been circulating insistently as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2027. However, the Qatari executive has put a definitive end to the speculation, firmly rejecting the notion.

Through one of his spokespeople, the Paris Saint-Germain president declared he had “absolutely no ambition, no intention, and no interest” in seeking the FIFA presidency. He added that he would continue to support “discreetly and constructively” the institutions of world and European football.

A name mentioned amid a crisis

In recent days, several European outlets, including The Telegraph and Politico, had touted Nasser Al-Khelaïfi as the candidate UEFA and several European federations might back against Gianni Infantino. This theory emerged in the midst of unprecedented tensions between the two organizations.

At the heart of this crisis is the FIFA Forward Enterprise project, which proposes the creation of a new commercial entity to manage FIFA’s major competitions, opening its capital to private investors. The plan has met fierce opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and several other key figures in world football.

UEFA even went so far as to threaten to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if the project goes ahead.

An influential figure in European football

While ruling out any FIFA bid, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi remains one of the most influential leaders in European football. President of Paris Saint-Germain since 2011, he sits on UEFA’s executive committee and also chairs the European Club Association (ECA), which represents over 850 clubs.

The ECA has also joined the chorus of criticism against FIFA, denouncing the way the FFE project was introduced, saying that the announcements were made “suddenly and unilaterally,” without adequate consultation of key stakeholders.

By denying any presidential ambitions, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has dismissed one of the main theories floated in recent days. The question now is whether the international backlash against Gianni Infantino’s project will prompt FIFA to revise its plans before the much-anticipated vote by member federations.
