NBA star becomes shareholder in Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid welcomes a prestigious new name among its shareholders. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, star of the Oklahoma City Thunder and a two-time NBA MVP, has officially invested in the Spanish club.
An investment after two outstanding seasons
At 28, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is continuing his rise to the top of world basketball. After winning the NBA title with Oklahoma City in 2025, he also claimed the award for the league’s best player in 2025 and again in 2026. During the 2025–2026 season, the Canadian point guard averaged 31.1 points per game, shooting 55.3% from the field, according to data cited in the Madrid club’s statement.
His arrival among Atlético’s shareholders marks a new step in his career, this time away from the basketball court. “I am happy to officially join Atlético Madrid’s group of shareholders,” said the player, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the club’s future.
Apollo Sports Capital remains the majority shareholder
Atlético has disclosed neither the amount invested by Gilgeous-Alexander nor the percentage of shares he holds. His entry into the club’s ownership therefore does not, according to the published information, alter the position of the majority shareholder. The American fund Apollo Sports Capital acquired a majority stake in the club, reported at 55% by several media outlets.
The NBA star’s arrival thus strengthens the presence of North American investors around the Madrid institution. Gilgeous-Alexander joins other basketball figures involved in European football, including LeBron James, who is associated with Liverpool, and Kevin Durant, an investor in Paris Saint-Germain.
