Spain: Rayo Vallecano–Athletic Club match definitively abandoned after objects were thrown
Rayo Vallecano supporters threw plastic balls and paper airplanes onto the pitch to demand the departure of president Raúl Martín Presa. The referee ended the match after several interruptions.
The match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club, part of the eighth round of LaLiga, did not reach its conclusion. The game, played at the Vallecas Stadium in Madrid, was definitively abandoned after objects were repeatedly thrown onto the pitch as part of a supporters’ protest against the club’s management.
The incidents began in the 13th minute, with the score still 0-0. Supporters threw plastic balls and paper airplanes onto the pitch, accompanying their actions with chants calling for the departure of Raúl Martín Presa, Rayo Vallecano’s president.
Despite several attempts to restart play, projectiles continued to land on the pitch. Referee José María Sánchez Martínez ultimately decided to definitively end the match after discussions with those involved. LaLiga confirmed the suspension and condemned behaviour that endangered the players’ safety and prevented the normal course of the competition.
A tense return to Vallecas
The match took place in a particular context for Rayo Vallecano. The club was returning to its stadium after 147 days away following problems concerning the condition and safety of the facilities. The restrictions imposed had forced the team to play its previous home matches at another venue.
The return to Vallecas therefore did not ease tensions between some supporters and the club’s management. The protest against Martín Presa was evident in the stands as well, where calls for his departure accompanied the throwing of objects.
The date and time for the match to resume will be announced later by the competition authorities. In the meantime, the match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club remains unfinished.
