Nigeria delivers stunning attacking display with 6-2 win over Egypt to reach Women's Africa Cup of Nations 2026 quarter-finals

The Super Falcons have done it again. In a display of total dominance from start to finish, Nigeria thrashed Egypt 6-2 to book their ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. This emphatic victory, combined with Malawi's 1-2 loss to Zambia, sees the defending champions advance to the last eight.

Mesmerizing attacking show

The tempo was set as early as the 21st minute. Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot, sending the Egyptian keeper the wrong way. Gift Monday doubled the lead in the first-half stoppage time (45+1) after coming on as a substitute. Egypt clawed one back just before halftime with a penalty converted by Nadine Ghazi, but Nigeria restored their two-goal cushion in the 57th minute after a brilliant assist from Rinsola Babajide.

The closing minutes turned into a showcase. Christy Ucheibe netted the fourth from the spot in the 81st minute, making it 4-1. Egypt responded quickly (84') as star player Nadine Ghazi struck again after a pass from Yasmine Zizo. In stoppage time, captain Rasheedat Ajibade slotted home the fifth with Nigeria's third penalty of the match. Joy Ezeomewo put the icing on the cake with a sixth goal in the 90+8th minute, again set up by Ajibade. 6-2, the final score.

All eyes on Cameroon

Rinsola Babajide, who provided two assists and was a constant threat down the flank, was named player of the match. After a shaky start with a 2-3 loss to Malawi, the Super Falcons got back on track with a 1-0 win over Zambia, giving them the head-to-head edge over the Copper Queens.
