Nigeria: Nwabali, Okoye and Okonkwo, three goalkeepers competing for one spot

Éric Chelle has three goalkeepers at his disposal for Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures: Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo. All three arrive with different arguments, as the head coach must decide on his No. 1 for the matches against Madagascar and then Guinea-Bissau.

Stanley Nwabali returned to Chippa United during the off-season after several months without a club. The 30-year-old goalkeeper quickly reclaimed his place in the South African club’s goal and has put together an impressive run since the start of the season.

He notably kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Golden Arrows, his first match of the season. He then followed that up with appearances against Richards Bay, Orlando Pirates, Siwelele, Milford FC and Mamelodi Sundowns. On September 12, against Sundowns, he produced another notable performance in the 1-1 draw before helping Chippa United to a 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy on September 20.

Across his seven league appearances this season, Nwabali has played 630 minutes and delivered several performances rated above 7/10 by FotMob. His return to the national team also comes with significant experience: he was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at AFCON 2025 and notably saved two penalties against Egypt.

Okoye, international experience and a turbulent start to the season

Maduka Okoye remains a serious contender. The Udinese goalkeeper began the season as the starter and played in the first five Serie A matches, totaling 450 minutes.

His start to the league campaign has been more inconsistent from a team perspective. Udinese began with a 1-1 draw against Como and a 3-2 victory at Monza before losing to Lazio, Inter and Cagliari. Against Inter, Okoye was heavily tested, facing 12 shots on target and conceding five goals in a 5-3 defeat. Against Cagliari, Udinese lost 1-0.

But Okoye has a recent advantage with the national team: he started both of Nigeria’s friendly matches in June against Poland and Portugal. He played the full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw against Poland and then in the 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

Okonkwo, the newcomer pushing from behind

Arthur Okonkwo is the third option. Called up for the first time during this qualifying campaign, the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper is building on an encouraging start to the season in the Championship.

After seven matchdays, he has played 630 minutes, kept three clean sheets and made 25 saves. His save percentage stands at 73.5%, according to FotMob data, while his club credits him with seven league starts. He notably kept consecutive clean sheets against QPR and Portsmouth on September 9 and 12.

His latest outing was less convincing, as he conceded three goals in Charlton’s 3-1 defeat at Cardiff on September 19. Before that, Okonkwo had produced several solid performances, notably in victories over West Ham and Preston.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper also already has experience with the Super Eagles. He has earned two caps and kept clean sheets in his first two international appearances. His call-up by Chelle now gives him the opportunity to directly challenge Nwabali and Okoye for the competitive matches.

Chelle facing three different profiles

Nwabali arrives with AFCON experience and good momentum with Chippa United. Okoye has more recent international experience and plays in Serie A every week. Okonkwo, meanwhile, arrives with the momentum of a goalkeeper who has already kept three clean sheets in seven Championship matchdays.

The hierarchy is therefore not set in stone on paper. Chelle will have to choose between the goalkeeper who already knows the role of starter for the Super Eagles, the one who played in the most recent international matches and the newcomer pushing with his club performances.

The first indication is expected on September 25 in Uyo, against Madagascar, as Nigeria begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. Four days later, the Super Eagles will travel to Guinea-Bissau.
