Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has addressed the disappointment surrounding his team after two consecutive defeats in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, calling on his players to respond on the pitch.

The Lions of Teranga face Iraq on Friday, 26 June, in a crucial final group match. With no points so far, they are on the brink of elimination, but Thiaw insists his side still have what it takes to turn things around.

People are disappointed; we know that. We have to accept it and respond by fighting back on the pitch. We’re working on it and we’re ready. We’ll do everything we can to win and continue our campaign. It’s up to us to react and show a different side to ourselves. If other African teams have managed to qualify for the next round, why not Senegal? We have what it takes to achieve that.

Thiaw’s words reflect the determination to salvage their tournament, but it will require a significant improvement from his side against Iraq. With the Senegalese public expecting more, the pressure is on. The match will determine whether Senegal exit early or keep their World Cup dreams alive.
