Senegal manager Pape Thiaw spoke out after the Teranga Lions' emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq. This triumph has reignited Senegal’s hopes in the race to qualify for the round of 16 at the World Cup.

We really wanted to win, especially by scoring as many goals as possible. With this 5-0 win today, I believe we deserved it. The team managed the match very well.

Despite an early goal from Diarra in the fourth minute and an Iraqi red card, Senegal struggled in the first half—a point acknowledged by their coach.

The start wasn’t easy. They caused us some problems and we lacked precision, with a bit of haste. At halftime, we made adjustments. When we played higher up the pitch, we controlled the game much better.

Despite the resounding win, Senegal remains among the best third-placed teams and still has to wait. Their position is precarious. "Now qualification is no longer in our hands. We did our part. We have to wait for the results of other matches and hope," concluded Pape Thiaw.
