Qatar unveils its squad for the 2026 World Cup
Qatar now knows the players who will represent its colors at the 2026 World Cup. Spanish head coach Julen Lopetegui has announced a 26-man squad for the tournament to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As expected, captain Akram Afif is included in the group. The Al-Sadd winger, named Asian Player of the Year for 2025, arrives in top form following a remarkable season that saw him notch 18 goals and 18 assists in 36 games. The Qatari national team is built mainly around players competing in the domestic league.
Twice crowned champions of Asia, Qatar is now aiming to secure its first-ever World Cup points. At the 2022 edition on home soil, the Qataris crashed out in the group stage after three straight defeats. To reach the Round of 16 this time, Julen Lopetegui’s men will need to finish among the top teams in their group, which features Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
