Salah vs Messi in North America? Breaking Down the real possibility of a historic clash

Strong World Cup 2026 form from Egypt & Argentina this week sparks intense calculations over a potential Messi-Salah clash.

Group stage dominance sets the stage

Both nations are flying high after the opening two matchdays of this expanded 48 team tournament. Fans are already looking ahead at the complex FIFA knockout brackets to see if the two legendary forwards will cross paths in North America.

Based on the current standings, here is how both teams shape up before the decisive final group fixtures:

Group G standings

  • 1. Egypt (4 Pts): Currently leading the group undefeated with one win and one draw boasting the strongest attack so far with four goals scored.
  • 2. Iran (2 Pts): Sitting in second place after drawing both of their opening matches holding a perfectly balanced record of two goals scored and two conceded.
  • 3. Belgium (2 Pts): Tied on points and goal difference with Iran but placed third due to fewer goals scored overall (1 GF).
  • 4. New Zealand (1 Pt): Rounding out the group in fourth place with a single point from a draw and a loss, alongside a -2 goal difference.

Group J standings

  • 1. Argentina (6 Pts): Currently dominating the group with a perfect record after two matches scoring five goals and conceding zero for a flawless +5 goal difference.
  • 2. Austria (3 Pts): Sitting in second place with one win and one loss maintaining a balanced record of 3 goal scored and 3 conceded.
  • 3. Jordan (0 Pts): In third place having played only one match so far suffering a defeat and currently holding a -2 goal difference.
  • 4. Algeria (0 Pts): Rounding out the group in fourth place after dropping their opening match sitting at the bottom with a -3 goal difference.

Scenario 1: The ultimate MetLife final

If the Pharaohs maintain their grip on Group G and the reigning world champions secure the top spot in Group J, they will be placed on completely opposite sides of the elimination bracket.

Under this pathway, a blockbuster matchup cannot happen early in the tournament. Both teams would need to win four consecutive knockout games to set up a dream World Cup Final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium.

Scenario 2: Round of 16 blockbuster

Should the North African side slip to second place in Group G while Lionel Messi’s squad cruises to the top of Group J, the path narrows quickly.

As runners-up, the African representatives would enter the Round of 32 via Match 88 against the second place team from Group D. If they progress and Argentina wins their respective round of 32 tie, the two heavyweights will collide directly in the Round of 16.

This early elimination path would guarantee tournament heartbreak for one of the two global icons.

Scenario 3: Quarter-final collision

The final potential path requires the exact opposite layout. If Hossam Hassan's men finish as group winners but the South American giants suffer a surprise slip to finish second in Group J, the bracket adjusts again.

The titleholders would enter the lower section of the bracket, creating a direct collision course with the winners of Group G. If both teams navigate their initial knockout hurdles, Salah and Messi would face off in a massive Quarter-final battle.
