Claudio Tapia, the man at the helm of the Argentine Football Association, is preparing to set his sights on the most powerful seat in world football.

According to Motivaciones Fútbol, the influential Argentine official intends to throw his hat into the ring for the FIFA presidency at the upcoming 2027 election.

His candidacy would pit him against the incumbent, Gianni Infantino, as well as Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi — a contest that promises to be one of the most captivating in decades, set against a backdrop of mounting political tension within the sport's governing structures.

An opportunity that seems suitable for Tapia

Tapia's position has been considerably bolstered by the news that CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin have both ruled out running personally. In this new landscape, the AFA chief could well emerge as the leading consensus candidate for the Americas. The vote is slated for March 18, 2027, during a congress in Morocco.

It is worth recalling that Claudio Tapia has presided over Argentine football since March 2017. Under his leadership, the national team enjoyed a golden era unlike any in the country's modern history: La Albiceleste swept to successive triumphs in the Copa América, the Finalissima, and the long-awaited World Cup title at the 2022 tournament in Qatar — a run of success that has considerably elevated the official's standing on the international stage.
