After their 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday, Argentina left the pitch with more than just a loss. Both Enzo Fernández and Leandro Paredes were sent off in the 2026 World Cup final.

This is an unprecedented event in World Cup history. With these two red cards, La Albiceleste became the only team ever to have two players sent off in a single final.

In total, there have been 7 red cards handed out in World Cup finals since 1930. Of these seven, four have been shown to Argentine players. The previous instance dates back to the 1990 Rome final, when Argentinians Pedro Monzón and Gustavo Dezotti were dismissed against Germany.

The other cases: Marcel Desailly in 1998 with France, Zinedine Zidane in 2006, and John Heitinga in 2010 with the Netherlands.

Thus, Argentina now holds more than half of all red cards in World Cup finals. It is indeed a truly sad record.
