As Uruguay kicks off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia, a historic moment has emerged for the South American side—thanks to their last line of defense.

Data from Opta confirms that Fernando Muslera has become the oldest Uruguayan player to ever feature in a World Cup match. At 39 years and 364 days old, the veteran goalkeeper now holds the record, surpassing Diego Godín, who was 36 years and 285 days old when he played in the 2022 tournament.

In a separate remarkable feat from the same World Cup, Cape Verde faced Spain and committed only a single foul throughout the entire match. According to records dating back to 1966—when full match broadcasts began—no team has ever recorded fewer fouls in a World Cup game.
