Just hours before their opening match at the 2026 World Cup against DR Congo, Portugal have been dealt a blow with the official withdrawal of Rúben Dias. The absence of the defensive stalwart could, however, provide extra hope for the Leopards in this Group K showdown.

Portugal will have to do without one of their key players for their World Cup opener against DR Congo. Indeed, Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Rúben Dias is out, as he is still not fully fit following his recent return from injury.

At the press conference, the Portuguese head coach left no room for doubt about his Manchester City centre-back:

"Rúben Dias is not fit. He’s not at 100%."

This decision makes sense, as the 29-year-old hasn’t taken part in any training sessions since the Seleção arrived in Florida.

Nevertheless, this absence is a major setback for the Portuguese side ahead of their opening Group K clash. Despite making two appearances in pre-tournament friendlies, Rúben Dias has yet to regain full fitness, forcing his coach to err on the side of caution against the Congolese Leopards.
