World Cup 2026: how Senegal can still qualify for the round of 16

Senegal is up against the wall, but not eliminated yet. The Lions of Teranga still have a mathematical chance to keep their World Cup adventure alive—if they can pull off something truly special.

The task, however, is a daunting one. Pape Thiaw’s men must first defeat Iraq in their final group stage match to secure third place in Group I with three points. But even a win might not be enough.

Senegal will also need to improve their goal difference, currently at -3, by winning as convincingly as possible. Beyond that, the Lions will have to wait for the other group results and hope to finish among the top eight third-placed teams—where teams are separated by points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play, and then FIFA ranking.
