The Netherlands went ahead in the 72nd minute thanks to Cody Gakpo. Just when it seemed the Dutch were on course for the next round, Morocco equalized in the dying moments courtesy of Issa Diop, who found the back of the net in stoppage time.
No goals were scored during extra time, forcing both sides into a penalty shootout. The Atlas Lions ultimately had the last word (3-2), buoyed by Yassine Bounou’s decisive saves and Ismael Saibari’s winning spot kick.
