Switzerland returns to the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 72 years. The Swiss will face Argentina in the early hours of Monday, with kick-off at 1am GMT.

After topping Group B ahead of Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Qatar, the Helvetians knocked out Algeria (2-0) in the round of 16 and edged Colombia (0-0, 4-3 on penalties).

The Swiss have reached the quarter-finals three times in the first five editions of the tournament, but have never managed to progress beyond this stage.

In Italy 1934, Switzerland fell to Czechoslovakia (2-3) in Turin. Four years later, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the 1938 edition in France, losing to Hungary (0-2).

As hosts in 1954, Switzerland reached the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Austria after a breathtaking encounter in Lausanne. The final score was an astonishing 7-5.
