World Cup: FIFA considers a 64-team tournament

As the first edition of the World Cup with 48 teams draws to a close, FIFA could be set to expand the tournament even further.

Speaking to Bluewin, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that the proposal for a 64-team tournament will be closely examined after this edition. "It is certainly a question that will be reviewed and debated within the relevant committees after this World Cup. Every nation should be able to dream of taking part," he explained.

Such a reform would allow even more teams to take part, but would also further extend the duration of the tournament.
