Crowned world champion with Spain, Lamine Yamal looked back on the victory over France and La Roja’s collective control.

Two months after Spain’s World Cup triumph, Lamine Yamal looked back on one of the matches that defined La Roja’s campaign: the 2-0 semi-final win over France. The FC Barcelona player, who won a penalty against Lucas Digne, believes the Spaniards had perfectly understood how to prevent Les Bleus from developing their transition game.

Before that semi-final, Yamal had already described the fixture as the most important match of his young career. Spain then confirmed it on the pitch before beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final (1-0) and claiming the world title.

Yamal reveals the key to beating Les Bleus

In an interview with L’Équipe, the 19-year-old winger explained that La Roja absolutely wanted to avoid an open game against France’s attacking qualities.

"In matches against France, there are two options: either it’s an open game with counter-attacks, and in that case, France will probably end up killing you because they have great attacking players. Or you keep the ball and dominate. The match got off to a good start for us with the 1-0, we started to have the ball and with so many high-quality players, when you have the ball, it eventually creates a big gap."

Yamal also looked back on the penalty incident that allowed Spain to take control of the match.

"It was a piece of play that we won. In this specific case, I was the one who won the penalty. At 1-0, a lot of things can happen. And what happened was that we played well from start to finish."

Another already impressive season with Barça

Since returning from the World Cup, Lamine Yamal has immediately regained his influence at club level. After seven La Liga matchdays, he already has 7 goals and 4 assists. He has also recorded 1 goal and 2 assists in the Champions League.

His record in all competitions therefore stands at 8 goals and 6 assists in 8 matches, amounting to 14 direct contributions. After the victory over France at the World Cup, the Barcelona player had already shown his confidence, and his start to the season is only extending that momentum.

Lamine Yamal among the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees

World champion, Spanish champion and the author of a 2025-2026 season featuring 25 goals and 20 assists in 57 matches, Lamine Yamal is logically among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. This is already his third nomination, after finishing second in the 2025 edition.

Didier Six recently said that Lamine Yamal deserved the Ballon d’Or. The verdict will be delivered on 26 October, but the young Spaniard is already continuing to build his case on the pitch.
