On the eve of the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, Xavi Hernández made no secret of his admiration for Lionel Messi.

In an interview with Spanish daily AS, the former FC Barcelona coach stated that his former teammate is, in his view, the greatest player of all time:

It's incredible. I don't think there are words to describe him. To me, he's the best player in history. He keeps making the difference on the pitch. His ambition and mentality make him a true competitor.

At 39, Messi is enjoying an outstanding World Cup. The Albiceleste captain has netted 8 goals and provided 4 assists in seven matches, leading Argentina all the way to the final. Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the Argentine legend has also racked up 90 goals and 51 assists in 104 games.
