2024 Women's AFCON: FIFA rankings of contending nations ahead of the tournament
Super Falcons - Nigeria

The 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations is set to kick off on Moroccan soil, running from July 5 to 26, 2025. Just weeks before the opening whistle, FIFA has released its latest women's world rankings, offering a snapshot of the current level of the twelve teams vying for African glory.

On June 12, 2025, FIFA updated its women's world rankings following the results of the June international break. The United States remain at the summit, followed by Spain (2nd), Germany (3rd), Brazil (4th), and England rounding out the top five.

Nigeria, the untouchable powerhouse of African women's football

The 12 qualified nations for the 2024 Women's AFCON are ranked between 36th and 153rd globally, with Nigeria leading the African charge. After defeating Cameroon 2-0 on June 3 and gearing up to face Portugal on the 23rd, the Super Falcons have held onto their spot.

The Nigerian squad has maintained their 36th place in the world since the March 15, 2025 update, dominating the continent for several years. This cements their status as favorites for the 2024 Women's AFCON. Worth noting, Nigeria boasts 11 Women's AFCON titles (1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018).

South Africa on alert, Morocco closing the gap

Defending champions South Africa follow Nigeria in the African rankings, sitting 54th in the world. Since February 22, 2025, the Banyana Banyana have gone six matches unbeaten—a run that boosts their confidence ahead of the Women's AFCON, where they aim for back-to-back titles. Morocco (60th), hosts of this 15th edition, hold onto third place on the continent, just behind South Africa.

Previously fourth in Africa, Zambia (65th) have been overtaken by Cameroon (64th) and slip to fifth. Since the latest FIFA update, the Copper Queens have recorded one win, two losses, and one draw in their last four outings. Similarly, Ghana's Black Queens (66th), who were fifth, now drop to sixth place.

Here are the FIFA rankings for the 12 Women's AFCON 2024 participants
