The record of 12 own goals set in Russia 2018 is on the verge of being toppled. With around fifty matches still to play, there have already been 11 own goals in this 2026 edition of the World Cup.

There were 6 own goals in 1998, 5 in 2014, 4 in 1954 and 2006, and fewer than 3 in all other editions. In fact, there were no own goals at all in 1934, 1950, 1958, 1962, and 1990.

Haiti took the lead on Wednesday night against Morocco thanks to Yassine Bounou. The Al-Hilal goalkeeper inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 10th minute, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Atlas Lions from claiming a 4-2 victory.
