Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will take charge of the Brazil vs Japan Round of 16 clash at the 2026 World Cup.

The 44-year-old official will be assisted on the lines by compatriots Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni, who will oversee offside calls and contentious decisions. Switzerland’s Sandro Schärer has been named fourth official, with his fellow countryman Stefan De Almeida serving as reserve.

Mariani is renowned for his strictness and his composure under pressure, and he’ll be tasked with striking the right balance between firmness and allowing the game to flow amid the high emotions of this knockout fixture. He has already officiated two group stage matches at this World Cup: Saudi Arabia’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay and Colombia’s 1-0 victory over DR Congo.
