AFCON U17: "I had to confirm I'm a good shooter," Ibrahima Sory Sow
Senegal kicked off the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations U17 with a narrow victory over Gambia (1-0) at the El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida, Morocco. This win, albeit minimal, puts the Young Lions at the top of Group C.
In the 7th minute, Ibrahima Sory Sow, captain and attacking midfielder of Génération Foot, opened the score with a stunning free-kick from 20 meters, nestling the ball into the bottom right corner past Gambian goalkeeper Sebastian Haruna Darboe. This early goal suggested a controlled match by the Senegalese.
However, despite favorable ball possession, the Young Lions struggled to capitalize on their territorial dominance. Gambia, though outplayed, remained threatening until the final whistle.
At the end of the match, Ibrahima Sory Sow was named man of the match. Asked about his decisive free-kick, he stated:
"Everyone knows I'm a good shooter. I had to confirm it." This statement reflects the young captain's confidence in his abilities and his determination to meet the expectations placed upon him.
