An exception to the rule
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Courtois has verbally agreed to sign a one year contract extension. His current deal is set to expire at the end of the current 2026 /27 campaign but the new agreement will secure his future in the Spanish capital for an additional season.
As reported by Spanish newspaper Marca in recent weeks, the club's administration views the Belgian as a vital, top tier asset. Consequently, Real Madrid have decided to make an exception to their usual policy regarding players over the age of 30 rewarding his consistent performances with a new deal.
Eight years of success
Since arriving from Chelsea eight years ago, the 34 year old has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football. His crucial saves were instrumental in securing the UEFA Champions League titles in 2022 and 2024.
He has also helped the club win three La Liga titles alongside numerous other domestic and international trophies.
Across 342 appearances, the Belgian international has kept 131 clean sheets while conceding 334 goal, cementing his legacy as one of the club's most reliable modern goalkeepers.
Real Madrid are expected to make an official announcement regarding the extension in the near future. Courtois will now focus on maintaining his elite form to help Carlo Ancelotti’s side challenge for domestic and European honours throughout the remainder of the campaign.
