Assane Diao justifies his choice to represent Senegal!
The rising star of the Italian club Como, Assane Diao (19 years old), has dealt a significant blow to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) by choosing to represent Senegal instead of Spain. This decision was made despite the efforts of his former national team mate and current Como coach, Cesc Fàbregas.
Diao: "I thank Spain for everything, but I have chosen Senegal."
In his first statement after joining the "Lions of Teranga" camp, the young forward, originally from Ndongane, expressed his feelings: "It was a difficult decision, because I love Spain and Senegal. But it's the best choice for me and my family. All Senegalese want me to be here, I will fight for Senegal."
He continued: "I was born in Senegal, but I grew up in Spain. For me, the Euro and the AFCON are the same. I have chosen Senegal and I thank Spain for everything it has given me. But now, I am here to work."
Assane Diao, aged 19, responded positively to the call of the coach Pape Thiaw, and is now among the 26 players called up for Senegal's next two matches against Sudan and Togo, as part of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. This comes after a stint with Spain's youth teams.
It is worth noting that the new addition to the Lions has played 30 matches this season (2024/2025) with Real Betis and Como, scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists.
