Attacked by Van der Vaart, Lamine Yamal responds
Rafael van der Vaart, the former Dutch international, has never shied away from expressing his strong opinions. In his role as a sports consultant, he has often critiqued young talents, and Lamine Yamal was no exception. After a tough first leg for Spain against the Netherlands, where Yamal was not at his best, Van der Vaart did not hesitate to question his attitude.
On the Dutch channel NOS, the former Real Madrid player noted that the young Spanish winger seemed to lack fighting spirit, highlighting details like his slightly lowered shorts, which he saw as a sign of unprofessionalism. According to him, Yamal needed to appreciate every minute on the field more and prove his worth, especially at his age.
However, in the return leg, Lamine Yamal responded in the most effective way possible: on the pitch. After scoring a decisive goal, he celebrated by lowering his shorts. A symbolic gesture, full of confidence and maturity, that quickly went viral on social media.
And even though he missed his penalty, Spain qualified for the Nations League semi-finals. On social media, Lamine Yamal laughed it off with a no less cheeky message: "Shorts down, one goal, one missed penalty... and into the semi-finals". Rafael van der Vaart will surely take notice!
