Barcelona: Deco explains why Barça passed on Rashford and Bernardo Silva

Deco confirmed that Barcelona considered Marcus Rashford and Bernardo Silva before deciding to pursue different profiles during the summer window.

Barcelona could have had a very different transfer window. Speaking to RAC1, Deco discussed several major deals, including Marcus Rashford and Bernardo Silva. Both players were admired in Catalonia, but the club ultimately decided not to make either of them part of the new project.

On Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barça, Deco was clear about the decision: “We are grateful for what he gave us, but Gordon suited the club’s philosophy better.” Barcelona therefore chose to invest in Anthony Gordon, signing the England winger from Newcastle for around €70 million plus €10 million in add-ons.

Rashford still waiting for his first goal back at United

After his spell in Catalonia, Rashford returned to Manchester United this summer. So far in 2026-27, the England international has played three Premier League matches and 193 minutes, starting twice. He has yet to score or provide an assist.

Gordon, by contrast, has quickly fitted into Hansi Flick’s system, particularly through his pressing and movement in behind, two qualities that help explain why Barça preferred his profile.

Bernardo wanted Barça, but the club had other priorities

Deco also confirmed that Bernardo Silva wanted to join Barcelona before eventually signing for Real Madrid. “We knew Bernardo Silva wanted to come to Barça, and he would have been an asset, but it did not fit our financial criteria.” Deco also explained that Bernardo’s position and profile were not what Barcelona were primarily looking for.

Bernardo eventually joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, signing until June 2028. He has appeared in all four of Madrid’s La Liga matches so far, starting twice and playing 205 minutes. He has yet to register a goal or an assist.

Gordon and Rodri were the profiles Barça chose

In Barcelona’s summer rebuild, Anthony Gordon effectively became the attacking option preferred over Rashford. In midfield, Rodri was the major investment while the Bernardo Silva opportunity was left aside. It was not a like-for-like replacement, however, as Rodri and Bernardo offer very different tactical profiles.

Rodri arrived from Manchester City for around €60 million and signed a deal running until June 2030. The two decisions underline Deco’s approach: prioritising players who fit Hansi Flick’s tactical requirements rather than simply taking the opportunity to sign a high-profile name.
