Unbeaten in six meetings with Burundi, Algeria hold a clear historical advantage ahead of their latest encounter in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Algeria face Burundi this Tuesday, September 29, in Bujumbura on matchday two of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The two national teams have rarely met, but the head-to-head record is heavily in favor of the Fennecs. In six meetings, Algeria have never lost to the Intamba mu Rugamba, recording four wins and two draws. In total, the Fennecs have scored 11 goals and conceded only three.

Six matches, no defeat for Algeria

The first meeting dates back to October 9, 1992, in the 1994 World Cup qualifiers. In Tlemcen, Algeria won 3-1, before a 0-0 draw in Bujumbura three months later. The two teams met again in 2001 in the 2002 AFCON qualifiers. The Fennecs won both legs: 2-1 in Algiers, followed by a 1-0 win in Bujumbura.

The 4-0 win in 2024 remains the latest memory

The most recent meeting between the two nations was particularly favorable for Algeria. In January 2024, in Lomé, the Fennecs swept aside Burundi 4-0 in preparation for the AFCON. Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring in the first minute, before Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Mohamed Amoura added to the tally. Five years earlier, in Doha, Burundi had managed to hold Algeria to a 1-1 draw, with Bounedjah opening the scoring before the opposition equalized.

A new context in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers

This time, the stakes will be very different. Algeria head to Bujumbura top of Group I after their 3-1 win over Zambia, while Burundi lost 1-0 to Togo on matchday one. The makeup of Group I therefore already gives this fixture particular importance. The Fennecs will look to extend their unbeaten run of more than three decades against Burundi and strengthen their position at the top.
