CAF CL: Mamelodi Sundowns edge past Espérance de Tunis!
The Mamelodi Sundowns took a step towards qualification by securing a 1-0 victory over Espérance de Tunis on Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
A well-deserved win against a Tunisian side that was overly cautious, only showing a true offensive side after conceding the goal.
Espérance opts for a defensive approach
The "Blood and Gold" clearly chose a defensive approach, content to sit back and defend deep. This strategy was illustrated by their meager possession of less than 25% by the hour mark.
In contrast, the South Africans, much more enterprising, struggled for a long time against the Tunisian defense before making the breakthrough in the 54th minute. Receiving a cross from Lucas Ribeiro, Jayden Adams nodded it on for Peter Shalulile, who beat Bechir Ben Said with a precise shot.
Espérance responded timidly, coming close to equalizing from a poorly cleared free-kick (64th minute). Lacking inspiration, Youcef Belaïli mostly stood out with a moment of frustration that could have led to his ejection.
Trailing, Espérance will have to turn the situation around at home. Meanwhile, the Sundowns will aim to hold onto their advantage to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
