Can Belaïli avoid FIFA's sanction? A legal expert weighs in

The case of Algerian international Youcef Belaïli (34) is nearing its conclusion. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is preparing to deliver its verdict on the appeal filed by the player against the suspension imposed by FIFA.

The world football governing body handed Belaïli a one-year ban over document forgery allegations dating back to his time at AC Ajaccio. Contesting this decision, the former Espérance de Tunis star turned to CAS, whose final ruling is expected on August 6.

Four legal arguments in Belaïli's favor

Speaking to Al Ain Sports, sports law expert Haïthem Ghallabi believes there are four key points that could convince CAS to overturn or at least reduce the player’s sanction:

  • The lack of sufficient evidence presented by FIFA to prove Belaïli’s guilt.
  • The absence of proof showing fraudulent intent or direct involvement by the player in the document forgery.
  • Potential procedural irregularities noted during FIFA’s investigation.
  • Existing CAS case law where similar sanctions have been annulled or reduced.

A return to Espérance de Tunis on the cards?

Meanwhile, Espérance Sportive de Tunis has reignited negotiations with Belaïli, despite a recent club statement claiming they had dropped their interest.

The "Blood and Gold" board is set to meet the player and his agent—who is also his father—this Wednesday to discuss extending his contract. A medical examination is also scheduled before any deal is finalized.

Although a preliminary agreement had been reached with MC Alger, EST is firmly back in the race. The Algerian international’s future now largely hinges on the decision CAS will hand down in the coming days.
