Surprises of CAF corridors.. Official resolution of Samson Adamu's future in the General Secretariat
The Confederation of African Football CAF has officially confirmed Nigerian administrator Samson Adamu as its permanent General Secretary on Sunday 1 November ending months of uncertainty over the leadership of African football's governing body.
Adamu who had served as acting General Secretary since March 2026 following the departure of Veron Mosengo Omba, received formal approval from CAF's Executive Committee during a meeting held earlier this week.
According to CAF's official announcement, the appointment followed an extensive recruitment process involving multiple candidates.
CAF confirms Samson Adamu's appointment after recruitment process
CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed that Adamu's selection was the result of a comprehensive recruitment exercise rather than an automatic promotion from his interim position.
The governing body explained that the vacancy had been widely advertised and that several candidates were interviewed before the Executive Committee approved the Nigerian administrator's appointment.
The announcement brings an end to a seven month transitional period during which Adamu managed CAF's administrative affairs on an acting basis.
His promotion also provides continuity within an organisation currently overseeing several major competitions and reforms to the African football calendar.
As previously reported, Adamu was appointed acting General Secretary in March, following Mosengo Omba's resignation.
Reports of his permanent appointment first emerged on 29 October, but official confirmation was still pending at that stage.
The initial reports linking Adamu with the permanent position have now been followed by formal confirmation from CAF itself.
Who is Samson Adamu, CAF's new General Secretary?
Adamu has extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018.
He initially served as Director of Competitions before becoming Director of Tournaments and Events.
During his 8 year with the organisation, the Nigerian official played an important role in organising several major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
His responsibilities involved coordinating tournament operations and supporting the delivery of CAF's flagship events.
Adamu is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an internationally recognised qualification focused on sports administration and governance.
His background in competition management and familiarity with CAF's internal structures were among the qualifications highlighted in the governing body's announcement.
The appointment represents another significant milestone for Nigerian representation in continental football administration.
Why did Véron Mosengo Omba leave CAF?
Adamu succeeds Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down in March 2026 after serving as CAF General Secretary for more than five years.
The Swiss-Congolese administrator announced his departure to pursue personal projects, subsequently becoming involved in football administration in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In its March 30 statement announcing the leadership transition, CAF confirmed that Adamu would temporarily assume the responsibilities of General Secretary while a permanent successor was selected.
Motsepe also expressed appreciation for Mosengo Omba's contribution to African football during his tenure.
Adamu's confirmation now formally completes that succession process.
What will Samson Adamu's responsibilities include?
As permanent General Secretary, Adamu will oversee CAF's day to day administration and support the implementation of the organisation's strategic priorities.
The position involves coordinating the work of CAF's administrative departments and helping implement decisions taken by its leadership.
His appointment comes during an important period for African football.
CAF is preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 which Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host, while also overseeing its major continental club competitions.
The organisation has also recently approved changes to the Africa Cup of Nations calendar.
As Foot Africa reported, CAF has decided to restore AFCON's two year cycle, although questions remain over the transition between the announced 2028, 2031 and 2033 editions.
Adamu's administrative experience could prove valuable in coordinating the implementation of those decisions and managing the operational demands of CAF's competitions.
However, the General Secretary's role is distinct from that of the CAF President and Executive Committee which retain responsibility for the organisation's major policy decisions.
A new chapter in CAF's administration
Adamu's appointment offers institutional continuity after several months of interim leadership.
Rather than recruiting an administrator from outside the organisation, CAF has selected an official already familiar with its competitions, procedures and administrative challenges.
The decision also provides a permanent leadership structure for the General Secretariat as CAF prepares for another demanding period involving continental tournaments and organisational reforms.
For Adamu, the immediate challenge will be translating his experience in tournament management into effective leadership across CAF's wider administration.
After 8 year within CAF and seven months as acting General Secretary, Samson Adamu has officially secured one of the most influential administrative positions in African football.
