CAN U20 2025: Egypt starts with a win against South Africa

On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Egypt claimed their first victory in the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating South Africa 1-0 at the Cairo International Stadium, during the tournament's opening match. The Junior Pharaohs secured three points and took the top spot in Group A.

From the kickoff, both opponents were closely matched. The Amajita gradually gained an edge over the young Pharaohs, dominating the play. With 62% possession, the South Africans tried in vain to shake the Egyptian defense despite having 4 shots on target out of 19 attempts.

On the other hand, the young Pharaohs stood firm with a resilient defense. The only goal of the match came in the 62nd minute, when Mohamed Abdallah El Hadad capitalized on a precise cross from Mohamed Raafat to open the scoring and secure the victory. This win propels Egypt to the top of Group A, while South Africa drops to the 5th and last place.
