Cape Town City failed to secure promotion to the Betway Premiership after settling for a 1-1 draw with Magesi FC in the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs on Wednesday.

The Citizens scored the opening goal at Athlone Stadium on the stroke of halftime courtesy of striker Therlo Moosa, who took his tally to two goals in the mini tournament.

Dikwena Tsa Meetse made their intentions clear in the second stanza as they leveled matters in the 48th minute, thanks Mcedi Vandala.

City finish their playoffs campaign sitting at the bottom of the mini league, having picked up four points from one win and as many draws, while losing two matches.

The John Comitis-owned side booked their playoff spot by virtue of sealing a second-placed position in the Motsepe Foundation Championship during the 2025/26 campaign.

Having been relegated from the topflight after falling short in the playoffs in the 2024 /25 season, City had hoped to stage an immediate return to the Betway Premiership.

Magesi, meanwhile, need nothing less than maximum points in their final match against table-toppers Milford FC to retain their elite league status.

The Limpopo-based outfit is in second place with four points, while the Stallions have six points ahead of the showdown at Seshego Stadium on Saturday, 13 June.
