Cristiano Ronaldo faces 100 lashes!
A global icon of football, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to light up the pitch and captivate crowds in the Middle East. His influence in Saudi Arabia keeps growing, and his performances with Al Nassr are living up to his legendary status, boasting 25 goals in 30 appearances this season. Yet, an unexpected incident casts a shadow over his journey, sparking heated controversy in Iran.
A gesture of kindness turned source of controversy
Indeed, the highly respected Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera revealed this weekend that Iranian authorities are considering sanctioning Ronaldo for a gesture made during a trip to Tehran in September 2023.
On the occasion of an Asian Champions League match against Persepolis, the Portuguese star was filmed embracing and kissing on the forehead Fatemeh Hammami, an Iranian artist with severe physical disabilities, renowned for her exceptional talent in painting. Watch the scene on video:
However, according to the laws in Iran, this gesture, while seen elsewhere as a simple act of respect and kindness, is considered “an infraction of public morality rules” and can be punished by a penalty of up to 100 lashes, as detailed by the Italian media.

Al-Nassr refuses to go to Iran!
As a result of this incident, the leaders of Al Nassr have reportedly approached the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to have their upcoming match against the Iranian club Esteghlal, scheduled for Monday, played on neutral ground.
This request is based on security reasons, with “Ronaldo having experienced a tumultuous time during his previous trip to Tehran”, the Saudi club argued.
Nevertheless, this request was categorically rejected by the AFC. Iranian officials have also stated that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure the safety and tranquility of CR7 and the Saudi club.
While this controversy raises questions about the strict interpretation of local norms, it also highlights the immense impact of Ronaldo, whose every move transcends the sporting realm to touch upon much broader cultural and societal issues.
