Yoane Wissa delivered once again. The Congolese striker scored the second goal for the DRC this Thursday, September 24, at Stade des Martyrs, during the 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in the opening match of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Another goal that takes his tally to 13 for the Leopards and sees him enter the top five scorers in the history of the national team.

The DRC did not falter in their opening match. Chancel Mbemba opened the scoring with a header in the 4th minute, before Yoane Wissa put the Leopards firmly in control after the break. The striker initially saw a first goal ruled out for offside, before finding the breakthrough in the 73rd minute following a combination with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

This goal confirms the role Wissa has taken in the Congolese attacking setup. Since returning to prominence with the national team, the striker has regularly found himself at the heart of decisive moments. During the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, he scored three goals and added three more during the final phase of the 2026 World Cup, in which the DRC participated for the first time since 1974.

This attacking presence continued with the Leopards. Against Equatorial Guinea, Wissa was dangerous from the first half before eventually scoring the 2-0 goal. His strike enabled the DRC to take their first three points in Group E of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Among the great Congolese scorers

Yoane Wissa now has 13 goals in 44 appearances for the DRC. He has overtaken Meschak Elia and Jean-Jacques Yemweni and now ranks among the five leading scorers in the history of the national team. Ahead of them are, in particular, Dieumerci Mbokani, Cédric Bakambu, Trésor Mputu and Shabani Nonda.

On the pitch, the Newcastle striker remains one of the DRC's main attacking outlets. Against Equatorial Guinea, he was decisive once again. To launch their 2027 AFCON campaign, the Leopards could hardly have asked for more from their striker.
