Cédric Bakambu’s departure from San Diego FC after just two months has raised questions. The Congolese striker had just enjoyed an impressive spell in MLS, scoring five goals in nine appearances, and several observers have put forward an explanation: his desire to remain fully available for the DR Congo national team.

US restrictions are said to have complicated his situation

According to several analysts, restrictions introduced in the United States amid the Ebola outbreak are said to have made it harder for Cédric Bakambu to travel and join the Leopards for international camps. This is said to have left the striker facing a difficult choice: continue his spell with San Diego or have more freedom to answer call-ups from the Congolese national team.

The player is said to have agreed in principle to terminate his contract so that he could consider the next step in his career at a club where his international availability would not be compromised. On the pitch, however, Bakambu’s spell in California had been productive. In nine appearances for San Diego FC, the former Olympique de Marseille player scored five goals.

DR Congo at the heart of his priorities?

Now a free agent, Bakambu can consider new opportunities to continue his career while remaining available for the Leopards. The international calendar is set to be an important one for DR Congo, who are due to face Sierra Leone in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

It should be noted, however, that the link between US health restrictions and Bakambu’s departure has not been officially confirmed by the player or San Diego FC. In his farewell message, the striker simply referred to “decisions beyond our control”.
