Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has pushed back against claims that the entire Senegal team walked off the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, insisting that such interpretations are inaccurate and do not reflect what actually took place.

Speaking about the incident, Mendy pointed to the match referee’s official report, acknowledging that play was temporarily halted but stressing that the game was never abandoned.

“People say we had all left the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final, but that’s not true. There were still players on the pitch. So it’s very important to mention that. That’s why the referee didn’t blow the final whistle. He actually mentioned it in his report. So I think it’s clear that there’s no problem. The referee says we didn’t abandon the match. The match stopped for just a moment. But it resumed and continued.”
